Slavery

Approximately half a million Africans were enslaved in the USA from 1619 to 1865, a number which grew to four million by 1865 when slaves were freed by Abraham Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation."

HMS Defence

HMS Defence was built at Plymouth Dockyard in 1763. It had 74 guns and took part in many famous sea battles including the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, the American Independence Wars and in India in 1783 at the Battle of Cuddalore. Later, after re-commissioning, Defence was at the Battle of Nile in 1798, and present at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, also seeing action at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The White House

The White House was designed by Irish Immigrant James Hoban who modelled it on Leinster House in Dublin, now the seat of the Irish Parliament.

It was ready by 1800 and its first occupant was President John Adams. During the war of 1812 (in 1814) it was burnt down by the British in retaliation for the Americans setting fire to the Upper Canada's Parliament Buildings in the Battle of York - (now Toronto).

F-16

Now flown by more than 20 air forces around the world. The F-16 known as the fighting Falcon, was often called "The Viper" by its pilots after the Battlestar Galactica starfighter of the same name.
